How Might We

“How Might We” (HMW) is a method to reframe challenges into opportunities for design. For example, instead of asking “How can we fix confusing navigation?”, you ask “How might we make navigation feel natural and intuitive?”

Why is this relevant to you? As a Creative Technologist, HMW questions help you and your team stay open to multiple solutions while keeping the user and context in mind. It also connects directly to collaboration with stakeholders, as they can help define the right questions.

Starting Points

  1. Write down problems or observations from research.
  2. Reframe them into open, positive HMW questions.
Example: How might we make visitors feel safe at night with our installation?
  3. Use HMW questions as input for brainstorming sessions.

Key Points

  1. A good HMW question is open, user-centered, and action-oriented.
  2. HMW helps avoid jumping too quickly to one solution.
  3. Document your HMW questions and show how they guided ideation.
  4. Involve stakeholders in formulating the questions.
